What is a crime? Which is the greater sin—murder or suicide? Is a lack of love also a crime? How do you respect your parents if you have never felt unconditional love yourself? And in life’s most difficult moments, what should we choose: justice or mercy?
A subjective narrative unfolds through the eyes of a young, maturing person, whose main goal is to discover and understand the motives and circumstances of a murder, and to expose all possible culprits. The play deconstructs the classic story of Hamlet, consciously reworking it and inviting us to view it from a fresh angle. Here, the traps are not physical but spiritual, and those who fall into them inevitably come face to face with themselves: for some, this encounter will be destructive, for others – purifying, and perhaps even hopeful.
The repertoire of the Theatre of Freaks includes plays by director Ieva Stundžytė that address uncomfortable, controversial topics for young audiences. Productions such as M. McDonagh’s The Pillowman and M. Norman’s Goodnight, Mom have sparked strong interest from audiences. With Mousetrap, the goal is once again to speak openly – to analyze family relationships, raise uncomfortable questions about intergenerational conflict, and to seek possible solutions for mutual understanding.
